1. 32-Bit vs. 64-Bit Memory Ceilings

The single most frequent reason artists encounter memory errors is running the 32-bit build of Paint Tool SAI 2 on a 64-bit Windows PC. 32-bit processes are restricted by Windows architecture to a maximum of 4 GB of virtual address space regardless of how much physical RAM your machine has.

  • If you create canvases larger than 5,000 x 5,000 pixels at 300 DPI with 30+ layers, 32-bit SAI 2 will quickly exhaust its allocated address space.

2. Optimizing Virtual Memory & History States

3. Canvas Auto-Recovery in SAI 2

Paint Tool SAI 2 incorporates an intelligent auto-recovery system. If your computer crashes or suffers a sudden power loss:

  • Launch SAI 2.
  • Click File > Recover Previous Work.
  • A browser modal will display time-stamped canvas state snapshots. Select the latest timestamp and click Restore.
