Clean, confident linework is the hallmark of professional digital illustration. Paint Tool SAI 2 is renowned across the global digital art community for its class-leading stroke stabilization engine and vector linework layers. Here is how to master both to achieve smooth inking.

How the Paint Tool SAI 2 Stabilizer Works

Located on the top-right toolbar of the SAI 2 window, the Stabilizer dropdown controls algorithmic curve dampening. It operates in two primary tiers:

  • Standard Levels (0 to 15): Provides mild smoothing for natural sketching, cross-hatching, and quick gestures without perceptible input delay.
  • Super Smoothing Levels (S-1 to S-7): Uses high-order Bézier curve dampening. When drawing slow, sweeping arc curves or inking long hair strands, levels S-1 through S-4 completely eliminate hand tremors and jitter.

Harnessing Linework (Vector) Layers

Rather than inking on a standard raster layer, clicking the New Linework Layer button (the canvas icon with a pen) creates a non-destructive vector layer:

  • Curve Tool: Click along anchor points to draw mathematically smooth vector paths that can be reshaped at any time.
  • Edit Tool: Allows you to click and drag vector nodes, smooth sharp angles, or delete stray points.
  • Pressure Tool: Click and drag left or right over any vector segment to manually increase or decrease line weight — enabling artists without pressure-sensitive styluses (or using a mouse) to produce professional lineart variations!
